Few day trips capture the magic of Southwest Florida like Sanibel and Captiva. These barrier islands are famous for their shell-strewn beaches, wildlife, and unhurried, old-Florida pace. With a car for the day, you can explore both at your own rhythm.
From the Fort Myers area, you'll cross the Sanibel Causeway. There's a toll to get onto the island (return is free), and the causeway islands themselves make a great quick stop for photos. Go early — parking at the popular beaches fills up by mid-morning, especially in season.
Sanibel's east-west orientation makes it one of the top shelling spots in the country. Try Bowman's Beach for a quieter stretch, or Lighthouse Beach at the island's eastern tip. Bring a mesh bag, wear water shoes, and remember: live shelling is prohibited, so only take empty shells.
A comfortable SUV is perfect for a beach day with coolers and chairs, while a fuel-efficient sedan keeps the drive cheap. We meet guests at PGD and RSW and deliver within 50 miles of 33955, so you can be island-bound shortly after you land.
