The Everglades sit right in Southwest Florida's backyard, which makes them one of the easiest — and most rewarding — day trips you can take from Cape Coral, Fort Myers, or Punta Gorda. Here's how to do it comfortably and safely.
From the SWFL coast, two routes stand out. I-75 "Alligator Alley" is the fast, straight shot east toward the Miccosukee boardwalks and the eastern park entrances. For a slower, more scenic experience, take US-41 (Tamiami Trail), which winds past Big Cypress National Preserve, roadside airboat operators, and the famous Skunk Ape Research Headquarters. Either way, plan for limited gas stations once you leave town — fill up before you go.
Alligators, wading birds, and the occasional manatee are the stars here. Keep a respectful distance, never feed wildlife, and stay on marked trails and boardwalks. Early morning and late afternoon are the best times for sightings and cooler temperatures.
You don't need anything rugged for the main routes — they're paved the whole way. A comfortable SUV like the Santa Fe, Pathfinder, or Telluride gives you space for coolers and gear, while a fuel-efficient sedan keeps the long, flat miles cheap. (Please note our vehicles are for paved roads only — no off-roading.)
