Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30, and in Southwest Florida that means sudden downpours, flooded intersections, and the occasional named storm. A little preparation keeps your trip safe and stress-free.

Driving in heavy rain

• Slow down and increase following distance. Wet pavement plus afternoon storms is the most common hazard — not the hurricanes themselves.
• Turn on headlights (Florida law requires it when wipers are on).
• Never drive through standing water. "Turn around, don't drown" — just a foot of moving water can carry a vehicle.
• Watch for dark intersections. Treat signals out as a four-way stop.

Emergency car kit checklist

• Bottled water and non-perishable snacks
• Phone charger and a backup power bank
• Flashlight and spare batteries
• Basic first-aid kit

Check the National Hurricane Center and local Lee & Charlotte County alerts before any trip. If a watch or warning is issued, keep the tank above half full, avoid coastal and low-lying roads, and don't try to "beat" a storm on the highway.
